The following is from Tom Wojick’s recent newsletter.
Recently, the headlines of four articles caught my attention:
“Job Insecurity Leads to Health Problems In U.S.” (Study by the University of Michigan, published in the Journal of Social Science and Medicine, 9/09)
“Depression, Anxiety Affect 15 Percent of Preschoolers” (Published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 8/09)
“U.S. Demand for Bullets is Going Great Guns” (LA Times, 8/30/09)
“Mental Stress Training Is Planned for U.S. Soldiers” (NY Times 8/18/09)
What could possibly connect soldiers, preschoolers, insecure employees and adults buying ammo at record rates?
At first I read them as independent events and reports, but I soon realized that they were connected to the subject of the fourth article
The connection is Stress, and more specifically the emotions of fear and anxiety. These two emotions  are having a tremendous impact on the health, effectiveness and well-being of children, adults and our culture, impacting our military services, schools, businesses and families. As the article on Mental Stress Training for Soldiers indicates, “our soldiers need intensive training in emotional resiliency.” And what the other three articles also indicate is that in all segments of our society we need to increase our emotional resiliency.
The turbulent times we find ourselves in are exacting a heavy toll on our most vital resources – people – and that in turn is negatively impacting the effectiveness of our institutions. Our current levels of emotional resilience are insufficient for navigating the stress, fear and anxiety that is endemic to our daily lives.  And the costs associated with this deficiency are and will be staggering…
We invite you to continue the conversation on emotional resiliency by attending a free teleconference call sponsored by 6 Seconds on September 15 from 12:00 – 1:00 PM EST. Please join my colleague Larry Glover and myself for an interactive presentation and discussion on this critical topic.
